Traditional German Spritz Cookies

These buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cookies, known as Spritzgebäck, are perfect for festive occasions or enjoying with tea or coffee. They can also be adapted to be a healthier option.

Main ingredients
  • 1 cup 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened Butter should be softened to room temperature.
  • ¾ cup ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar Can substitute with coconut sugar for a healthier version.
  • 1 1 egg Room temperature egg works best.
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp vanilla extract (or almond extract) Vanilla is traditional, but almond adds unique flavor.
  • 2 cups 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, sifted Can substitute half with oat flour for added fiber.
  • 1 pinch Pinch of salt Enhances flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract or almond extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the sifted flour and a pinch of salt. Mix until the dough is smooth and well incorporated.
  4. Use a cookie press or piping bag with your choice of decorating tip to pipe the cookie shapes onto parchment-lined baking sheets.
Baking
  1. Place the baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  2. Once done, remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack until completely cooled.

Notes

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or freeze in a zip-top freezer bag for up to three months. They can fit into a healthy lifestyle with the right adaptations.
