Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups sourdough starter Provides tangy flavor
  • 1/2 cup milk Adds moisture
  • 1/3 cup melted butter Brings richness and flavor
  • 1/4 cup sugar Can substitute with healthier options
  • 1 piece egg Contributes to dough structure
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour if needed
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavors and strengthens gluten
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon Key flavor for rolls
Filling
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar For a warm, caramel flavor
Frosting
  • 1 block cream cheese Foundation for the frosting
  • 2 cups powdered sugar Sweetens and thickens the frosting
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances frosting flavor

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, milk, melted butter, sugar, and egg. Mix well until you have a smooth mixture.
  2. Gradually add the flour and salt to the mixture. Knead the dough until it forms a soft, slightly sticky ball. This may take around 5-7 minutes.
  3. Cover the bowl, and let the dough rise in a warm place for 4-8 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
Rolling and Filling
  1. Once the dough has risen, dust a clean surface with flour and roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough. Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other.
  3. Use a sharp knife to cut the rolled dough into 1-2 inch thick rolls.
Second Rise and Baking
  1. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, ensuring they are close together but not touching. Let them rise for another hour.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Frosting
  1. While the rolls are baking, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
  2. Once the cinnamon rolls are out of the oven, spread the frosting generously over them while they are still warm.

Notes

Store rolls in an airtight container at room temperature. For longer storage, freeze individual rolls and reheat them in the microwave or oven. Consider substituting sugar with mashed banana or applesauce for a healthier version.
