Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup quark cheese A fresh dairy product high in protein.
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • Oil for frying (shortening, lard, or canola)
Coating Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon For coating the fried quark balls.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, vanilla sugar, and a pinch of salt. Mix well.
  2. Next, add the quark cheese, egg, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Stir until all ingredients are combined into a dough.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5-8 minutes until it becomes smooth.
  4. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. After the dough has risen, divide it into small pieces and roll them into balls that are about 1-2 inches in diameter.
  6. In a deep frying pan or deep fryer, preheat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
Cooking
  1. Carefully place the dough balls in the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes until they are golden brown.
  2. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried quark balls and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  3. While they are still warm, roll the quark balls in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.

Notes

These quark balls are best served warm and can be paired with fresh fruit or healthy toppings. For a healthier version, consider whole wheat flour or natural sweeteners.
