Materials Needed
  • 1 Plastic Grocery Bag Plastic Grocery Bag Stuff with polyester fiber fill.
  • 1 bag Polyester Fiber Fill Provides the stuffing for your plastic bag.
  • 1 ball Yarn Use for creating ridges around the pumpkin.
  • 1 roll Masking Tape Used to secure the stem.
  • 1 Cup Flour Essential for the paper mache paste.
  • 1.5 Cups Water Mixed with flour to create the paste.
  • 1 stack Newspaper Tear into strips for the paper mache layers.
  • 1 can Latex Primer (Optional) Helps the paint adhere better.
  • 1 bottle Orange Acrylic Paint For the pumpkin's main color.
  • 1 bottle Brown Paint Use for painting the stem.
Tools Needed
  • 1 pair Scissors For cutting newspaper into strips.
  • 1 whisk Whisk For mixing paper mache paste.
  • 1 bowl Mixing Bowl For combining flour and water.
  • 1 jar Mason Jar (or Glass) To hold your pumpkin while it dries.
  • 1 brush Paintbrush To apply paint on your pumpkin.

Method
 

Creating the Pumpkin Base
  1. Stuff the plastic grocery bag with fiber fill stuffing to your desired size and tie a knot.
  2. Cut off the handles and fold down the remaining plastic to create a stem shape, securing with masking tape.
Adding Texture
  1. Wrap yarn around the pumpkin several times to create ridges, securing with knots.
Preparing the Paper Mache Paste
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups of water with 1 cup of flour, and whisk until smooth.
Applying Newspaper Strips
  1. Tear newspaper into strips about 1-inch wide, dip into the paste, and apply over the pumpkin.
Building Layers
  1. Allow the first layer to dry for 24 hours, then apply a second layer and let it dry another 24 hours.
Painting the Pumpkin
  1. Optionally apply latex primer, let dry, then paint the pumpkin with orange acrylic paint and brown for the stem.
Displaying Your Pumpkin
  1. Once dried, your Paper Mache Pumpkin is ready for display as a centerpiece or part of Halloween decor.

Notes

Ensure to use non-glossy newspaper for better adhesion. Sand lightly between paint layers for a smoother finish if desired.
