Ingredients

For the Chicken
  • 4 pieces boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour, for dusting
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
For the Cabbage Mixture
  • 1 medium red cabbage, shredded
  • 1 large apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp caraway seeds (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and a light dusting of flour.
  2. In a large skillet, heat oil and butter over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside on a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and sauté until softened and fragrant.
  4. Add the shredded cabbage and thinly sliced apple. Cook for about 5 minutes until they start to soften.
  5. Stir in the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and caraway seeds (if using). Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Cover the skillet and let the mixture simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes until the cabbage is tender.
  7. Return the cooked chicken to the pan with the cabbage and apple mixture for a few minutes to warm it through.
  8. Serve hot alongside your favorite traditional German sides.
