Preparation
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks.
- In a large saucepan, combine the chopped apples, water, cinnamon stick, lemon juice, and sugar if desired.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes until the apples are soft.
- Remove the cinnamon stick. For a smooth Apfelmus, puree the apples in a food processor or blender, or mash them with a fork for a chunkier texture.
- Serve warm or let it cool completely before storing.
Notes
Store in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze in airtight containers for up to three months. Leave space in containers for expansion when freezing.
