Ingredients

For the dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For the filling
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples (preferably Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, lukewarm water, and vegetable oil. Mix until smooth. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it's elastic. Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. While the dough is resting, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, raisins, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Set aside.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. On a floured surface, roll out the dough as thinly as possible. Transfer it to a clean kitchen towel and carefully stretch it to achieve a paper-thin consistency.
  5. Spread the bread crumbs evenly over the stretched dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Spoon the apple filling over the bread crumbs.
  6. Using the kitchen towel, gently roll the dough into a log starting from one long side. Transfer the strudel to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Brush the strudel with melted butter and bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and crunchy.
  8. Let it cool slightly before slicing to allow the filling to set for easier serving.

Notes

Serve warm with powdered sugar or Greek yogurt for a healthier option. For storage, it can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days or frozen for three months.
