Method
Preparation of Syrup
- In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly.
- Reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set syrup aside.
Apple Filling
- In a mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and 2 tablespoons softened butter. Mix until crumb-like consistency.
Dumpling Assembly
- Cut each pie crust in half and roll into 8-inch circles.
- Place each apple in the center of a dough circle. Fill with crumb filling and fold dough over apple, sealing securely.
Baking
- Lightly grease a 13" x 9" baking dish. Place dumplings in the dish and drizzle with syrup.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
Notes
Consider using natural sweeteners for a lower-sugar version. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
