Ingredients
  

For the Dumplings
  • 8 medium Granny Smith apples Tart apples that complement the sweetness.
  • 2 packages Refrigerated pie crusts (15 oz.) Saves time in preparation.
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar Adds richness to the apple filling.
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Warming spice for the filling.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg Gives depth to the filling.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (softened) Helps bind filling ingredients.
For the Syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups Sugar Used for the sweet syrup.
  • 2 cups Water Dissolves the sugar.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon Adds flavor to the syrup.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg Enhances the syrup's taste.
  • 1/4 cup Butter Enriches the syrup.

Method
 

Preparation of Syrup
  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly.
  2. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set syrup aside.
Apple Filling
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and 2 tablespoons softened butter. Mix until crumb-like consistency.
Dumpling Assembly
  1. Cut each pie crust in half and roll into 8-inch circles.
  2. Place each apple in the center of a dough circle. Fill with crumb filling and fold dough over apple, sealing securely.
Baking
  1. Lightly grease a 13" x 9" baking dish. Place dumplings in the dish and drizzle with syrup.
  2. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Notes

Consider using natural sweeteners for a lower-sugar version. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
