Assembly
- Place an apple in the center of each pie crust square and fill the core with the sugar mixture.
- Wrap the pie crust around the apple and pinch the seams to seal.
- Arrange the wrapped apples in a baking dish in a single layer.
Baking
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, then stir in the water and vanilla extract.
- Pour the butter mixture evenly over the dumplings in the baking dish.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm, optionally topping with chopped nuts.
