Preparation
- Combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl.
- Add the cold salted butter pieces and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the ice water, one teaspoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Be gentle and do not overmix.
Assembly
- Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a circle about 6 inches in diameter.
- Peel and core the apple, cut it into quarters, and place one quarter in the center of the dough circle.
- Mix ½ cup of brown sugar with ground cinnamon and sprinkle a portion inside the hollow of the apple.
- Add one tablespoon of salted butter on top of the sugar mixture.
- Lift the edges of the dough around the apple and pinch together at the top to seal.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Place the dumpling in a small baking dish.
- Combine the remaining 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and water, then pour it around the dumpling in the baking dish.
- Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the apple is tender.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For a healthier option, consider using whole wheat flour. This recipe can also be made in advance and frozen for later enjoyment. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven.
